Installation of Utility Under-Track Crossing

September 4th, 2015

Ribblesdale Crossing 400250Traditional timber heading was among the techniques given consideration for installation of a new cable crossing beneath an existing rail crossing in Ribblesdale near Clitheroe.

However, following closer examination of the ground conditions which exposed limestone outcrop at shallow depth, a rock auger became preferred method for installation.

The rail line remained operational throughout the works, due to the depth of limestone cover over the augered crossing.

The crossing took just three days to drill once launch and reception pits had been excavated by hand, and was completed well in advance of the cabling installation works.
